Did You Ever Wonder?

Published by Mr. J at 9:35 am under Sustainability, Video

Below you will find a video created by Bill Faren, a teacher working in the Dominican Republic. It raises many good questions and should be a great starting point for our discussions about sustainability. We will watch the video as a group at our next meeting and have a face-to-face conversation about his message, but if you get a chance, watch it here and start the questions in the comment section.

That goes for other student bloggers who have happened to have made their way to our site. Let’s see what students think about the job their schools are doing!

If we are lucky, we may be able to use the power of networking to allow Bill answer some of our questions on this blog, or perhaps he can Skype into a meeting and join our talk. Remember, do not just watch the video- share your thoughts!

You canĀ  read more on the subject here, and I have asked Lindsea from Students 2.0 to join our discussion. Give her a visit and share your thoughts.

It’s great to see Lindsea taking leadership on this. Students are perfectly capable of leading the next generation to sustainability, and Lindsea is showing how it’s done at her own school in Honolulu.

I hope some of your students can join this elite group of world youth leaders by taking initiative and promoting real change at their local school, homes, and community.

Every school that changes its habits makes a difference to the future.

Keep up the impressive work, everybody. You’re so lucky to have Mr. Jabiz as a teacher.

    Ma’ Salaama.

Thanks for posting the video and expanding the discussion. I’ve definitely been curious of “…what students think about the job their schools are doing!” Students, please let us know what you think!
This is a great blog/club. Very important work you are doing.
Would love to join your discussion via Skype (if possible) or text, if need be.
    Cheers, Bill Farren

I have seen the video 3 times and i think it’s amazing. Our school does have clubs like “The Global Issues Club” and you can also take the elective. I have taken the elective and I’m part of the club so I really do want to help. But thinking of other schools I know no one really has these opportunities of real life thinking. I know the video is based on the US but it is happening every where. It’s a good way to really open up your eyes.

This video really makes me think about the every-day things we have. School, resources etc.. it made me wonder. I agree with Leila, I have taken the Global Issues elective and I am in the club. And all of those thoughts that just kept on coming in my mind, made me think of real-life thinking.

I believe this video is quite an eye-opener. I liked the part in the end, where it said “21st century learning will have to include 20th century unlearning.”

While all the things the video said about depletion of natural resources, and how the people of the world are working for their own benefit and not the benefit of the planet in general, I feel the video is being very negative about education.

Sure, the education system right now does have a scope for improvement, but it is almost as if it is being blamed because of all the dropouts. So, it’s okay to think school is boring and drop out but it is not okay to not have a creative enough system?

However, I really like all the points that were put into focus, and I believe with such powerful messages, the people of the world can save our resources and work in a more productive fashion. Like Nabila and Leila are part of the Global Issues Club, there is also Model United Nations which discusses how to use resources carefully and not overuse them (Environment Committee).

    Hey,
This is Paige, I was watch the video and thinking about it I agree that everyone should stop making more ideas and making new stuff and start to care. I liked this video a lot becasue it helps you think about a lot of different stuff and want to make people care. What would happen if no one cared? What would happen to the world if everyone keeps it the same from now? Is there any other way to try and make people care?

I think that this video is so right it scares me in a good way. If more poeple would get there head out of the sand the world would be a much better place.

Mr. Farren, your video has a quote from the authors of national capitalism that reads “How is it that we’ve created an economic system that tells us it’s cheaper to destroy the earth and exhaust it’s people than to nurture them both” This is a very interesting question, in a sense, people CAN make huge amounts of profit by exploitation. In a world where all that matters is the size of your check book, people have begun to neglect the things that really matter, human beings, community, and the Earth. When all that matters is sucking people dry of little peices of paper and metal for your own intrest, some people just don’t care about what happens to those they step on along the way. From what I’ve read, watched, and heard, the ONLY way to get people to care is to show how it comes back and hurts them, or anything they care about. YOU MUST EDUCATE THEM!
